Don’t Worry About What the Gurus Think About You

This is in response to a comment by Susan today on the “3 Ways to Position Yourself” post on April 30th.

Yes, it would be great if the gurus in your industry came out and rallied around the content in your book. But in the scheme of things, it doesn’t influence the quality of what you are creating with your work or it’s ability to help people.

Here’s a tip for you that anybody can use:

A great way to get their support is to send the entire manuscript or a partial manuscript and ask for their feedback as an expert in the field that you admire. It’s much more likely that you will get an endorsement fromt hem and they will support it in the marketplace, because you asked for their input.

It’s natural to have all those thoughts. You’ll always look at all the reasons maybe it would be better to not finish or I better be prepared for any negatives once I do.

Get ready for some conflicts

If you’re coming from a position of disagreement with what the big boys say, there may be some flack coming in your direction. You can’t tell someone the world is round when everyone has always believed it was flat and not have some controversy. You have to ask yourself if your belief in what you have to say is strong enough to want to put it out there and help people.

But I think this is a great idea for a book and will help so many people especially if it’s done by someone who cares about helping in this situation where so many people end up feeling taken advantage of. Depending on the depth and content covered in the book, it’s possible you have material that could go further than a book.

You could get a publisher and I could help you with that. Or you could self-publish, but it won’t get as wide of a distribution. It depends on what role you want this book to play in your career.

How does this product serve you?

You may have heard me say this before, but I don’t approach product creation from a cookie cutter prospective.

Look at 2 things:

What do you want your life and your business to look like?

How do you want this book to facilitate that?

What comes after the book, where does it take you?

Where does it take your readers?

Before You’re Ready to Create Product You Have to Create You

Reply to Van’s comment on yesterday’s post:

It’s 7:00PM and I just finished a day of mentoring that I’m doing at my house this weekend. I know you want a worksheet, I’d want one too, but it’s not possible. I put 110% of my knowledge and my energy into delivering exactly what you need to get where you want to go. It’s not a cookie cutter process. Why? Because I’m working with real people and we go deep to clear the block that have prevented you from already being where you want to go.

Today we worked on exactly what you’re talking about Van, the internal blocks that prevent you from moving forward. It’s not anything that can be boiled down to a worksheet unfortunately. I appreciate the level of honesty and candor you were willing to show in your comment. That say a lot about your desire to have a shift in your life.

It’s a very individualized process. Everyone is willing to go there at a different rate of speed and to a different depth. It can be challenging and scary. Honestly, if it wasn’t scary for you on some level, you would have already done it. Especially since you’re already clear on what a couple of your blocks are, but really they’re just the symptom, not the cause.

And you’re not alone. We talked about those same issues today.

If you’re ready to get your life on track and build a business that will have a solid foundation, then the best way to do that is to take the weekend and get it done. I may possibly arrange to do something in the Bay area next month if I get feedback that enough people are ready to move forward.

If you’re not that serious or you’re in no hurry, buy my book and do all the exercises, which depending on how close you are, could make some instant shifts, but it will at least start a different internal and external conversation for you.

The book in itself can change the quality and focus of your life if you do all the exercises and take the action steps. It would be very powerful if you and your wife both did it. Then when you’re ready, take the weekend and come and get it done.

The reality is, very few people can do it on their own and they end up spending a lot more time and money trying to do it cheaper, but it doesn’t work and after a couple year’s they’re still in the same place wishing things were different or still looking for a magic bullet to instantly create a business.

The difficulty is not in creating the products. It’s in the discovery process that gets you to the point of creating the product and the foundation of removing the blocks and the introspection and personal development that gets you ready for the success you’ll achieve so you don’t get to a point and sabotage yourself and create one of those famous ‘made it, lost it and had to make it again’ stories.

You Can Create Your Own Products and Be the Guru

I was just reading Jerry’s comment on the “3 Ways to Position Yourself” post below and he commented on how he could relate to the story of the woman who came into my program thinking she had one passion and it turned out she had one that was much bigger and way more lucrative and also my ability to “see” what she couldn’t. You can read the rest of his comment with that post, but he ended by asking what services offer to, in his words, “help me identify and implement action that can get me going in pursuit of a gratifying and fulfilling vocation.”

To answer Jerry’s question. A place to start on the low end would be getting my book on Amazon y clicking on the cover on this blog site. That’s not the fastest way to make things happen and if you’re the kind of person that does better when someone’s holding you accountable, which most people do, there are other options.

I do have different ways I work with people depending on how quickly you want to get things accomplished. I think the best way is always to show up at a location, spend a couple days together and just get it done. No more talking about it, just do it. I do that as a small group closed door intensive, but not on a regular schedule, and I don’t have another one planned. I also do a limited amount of private mentoring clients at $1500 a month with weekly sessions for a 3 month minimum.

One reason this is such a hot topic is that most of the gurus teaching product creation are really teaching packaging and marketing of a product-not creation, so if you don’t already have your topic and your content nailed down, what are you going to do with what you learn at one of those $5000 weekends?

I’m not going to name names, since a lot of these gurus are my friends, but I know many people who start at the part where you already have whatever it is you’re going to be selling all ready to go. Why? Because they don’t know how to teach you to find ‘your topic’, not just ‘a topic’. They don’t know how to draw real content out of you, out of your passion. In fact a lot of these guys, and I don’t hold this against them, because it’s not what they’re an expert at, but they tell you to create content by just interviewing a bunch of people!

That’s not your content! It doesn’t do anything to position you as an expert, and this whole Napoleon Hill was a reporter and made his fortune by interviewing other people is a cop out. You’ve got great content inside you, now you just need to get it out. And your content will be so much more powerful than simply interviewing other people. If you’re going to build a following, it’s because of who you are and what you have to teach, not because you know how to ask question on the phone. Anybody can do that.

The post Jerry commented on resonated with several people who emailed me and didn’t post a comment, and I answer those emails by asking them to post a comment so everyone can benefit from the answer to their questions because that’s the only way I can answer. There just isn’t enough time for me to answer everyone individually, sorry. I get plenty of comments like “It must be meant to be because you really spoke to me!!”, and one woman who said if I would organize a live event in the Bay area to teach everything I’ve been talking about, she would get at least 10 people there.

I love to teach and if I had time I would blog and answer your questions all day long, but I have other projects. I’m actually doing a small mentoring group at my home this weekend, the last event before I move to Maui the middle of the month. I may consider doing a live event over the summer if you’re really serious about taking action and not only discovering your passion, but also allowing me to help you consciously design your life blueprint so you can live the life of your dreams, because personally, I don’t see any reason to live any other way. And then together we’ll create what your product line will be and what your business is going to look like and I’ll teach you the sales and communication skills you need to make your business a success.

Well, that’s what I would teach if I was going to do this and I’m not kidding, this isn’t a marketing ploy, I really don’t know if I can fit it into my schedule before Women’s Business Empowerment Summit in August, given the fact that I’m just moving to Hawaii. If I do decide I can do it, is there anything else you’d want to learn or does what I’ve said about cover it?
